During WW2, when Hitler visited Paris, the French cut the lift cables on the Eiffel Tower so that Hitler would have to climb the steps if he wanted to reach the top. The lifts were repaired only in 1946. During the Nazi occupation the tower was closed for public.

Strictly traditional methods are followed while repainting the tower, which means it’s still done old-school, with a paintbrush and a bucket, and no mechanical painting is allowed.
